When he became homeless in the late 1980s David R Mellor picked up a pen and began writing poetry.
When he finally got settled he returned to school to educate himself then qualified as a social worker and he began performing his poems on stage.
Catherine Smyth was commissioned by the Big Issue In The North to write a news article about David and, after chatting to Catherine, he felt able to write his first ever poem about his homeless experiences entitled ‘At Last’.
On reading the article he wrote to say… “thank you so much for the lovely article, brought tears to my eyes when I got it today. So grateful and hope it inspires others.”
