Artist Laura Doherty has so far painted five of her former classrooms with giganitic murals bringing history, English and music to life.
The former Haslingden High School student painted her first classroom when she was 16 and, after finishing her A levels, she was invited to become the school’s first artist in residence.
Laura, who will be going on to study painting at a London Art School is determined her school will never forget her.
My story on Laura made page leads in the Rossendale Free Press and Lancashire Telegraph. Thank you to Liz Henson Photography for the accompanying photographs.
OTHER NEWS
The last month has been spent completing three four page newsletters for Antony and Patricia Hairdressers in Rawtenstall, Veterans In Communities and JJO.
All three are completely different and each poses its own challenges, but it is most rewarding when the organisations receive positive feedback on the newsletters. I produce a monthly newsletter for VIC and it is distributed across the country. Not all stories make the press, but an in-house newsletter is an excellent way of making sure all your stories are told.
Haslingden High School’s singing sensation Paddy won a place in the final of the CBBC talent show Got What It Takes. The school lso made the headlines with a trip to America, students becoming teachers to instruct in iPad usage and a new student winning an art competition.
At Fearns Community Sports College the students enjoyed writing the news on BBC News School Report day, school sports leaders won a place on a prestigious sports academy course and a band’s visit proved a big hit with pupils.
Students at Whitworth Community High School enjoyed a performing arts trip to Italy and also sang for Rossendale Hospice at a prestigious event at Blackburn Cathedral.
I have also been fortunate to be asked to write news items for four ad hoc clients and all have been printed in the Lancashire Telegraph and Rossendale Free Press. I wrote about a special faith team being introduced at St Mary’s RC School, Bacup, a new community information website created by Rossendale Enterprise Anchor Limited, Dansworks Dance Academy’s twinning relationship with a Dance School in Malta and Haslingden Community Link bidding to become a Neighbourhood Centre.
