The mother of murdered ‘Goth’ Sophie Lancaster delivered a hard hitting talk to pupils at Fearns
Community Sports College, Stacksteads.
Sylvia Lancaster also met three pupils who have written news articles for an Amnesty International competition to highlight the human rights violation that was committed against Sophie and her boyfriend Robert Maltby who were attacked for dressing differently.
The story and photographs by Catheine Smyth as part of the school’s media contract, were used as a page lead in both the Rossendale Free Press and the Lancashire Telegraph.

I am delighted to announce I am now working for Pleckgate High School as press and PR officer and am looking forward to getting to know the staff and students. I have already subbed 20 articles for the next edition of the school magazine Pleckgate News.
Fearns has been a busy place with pupils completing curriculum challenges, raising money for charity, taking part in careers events and bringing fairytales to life for their parents. As well as being used by the press, the news stories are all available on the school’s website.
At Haslingden High School the latest edition of the school’s magazine Haslingden Highlights has been produced. The school has also made the press by raising enough money to keep a charity solvent for a year, achieving the best ever A level results which put the school sixth form in the top 10 per cent in the country, holding a stunning dance show and raising money for those affected by the tornado in the Philippines. In the Big Issue In The North In The North dated 20th January I have written a feature on government money awarded to councils to combat rogue landlords.
And the first School News paper in a day project of 2014 has been booked by St Anne’s Edgeside.
