Brit award nominee John Newman made a high school pupil’s day when he took time out from a gig to autograph her project about him and he gave her a hug.
Shannon Cokell’s mum Terry grew up in the village of Stainton in North Yorkshire where John is from and, as children, they would play together.
Now 12-year-old Shannon also loves his music and got to meet him when he played at Manchester’s Academy.
Shannon is a pupil at Haslingden High School where Catherine Smyth provides press and PR coverage. The story appeared in the Lancashire Telegraph and is was also printed in the Rossendale Free Press.

A New Year has brought a new contract – press and PR support for Pleckgate High School in Blackburn. Already 14 stories have been written for the school. News stories about excellence in the geography and the school’s sporting ambassadors have featured in Asian Image.

Besides the Shannon story, Haslingden High School has also made the local and regional press because of a teacher planning to run the Manchester marathon for charity. Another news story was written and published about praise from the Schools’ Minister for Haslingden being among the top 14 per cent in the country for continued improvement in GCSEs. A PR story for Bacup’s Dansworks Dance Academy about a tap dancer who will be taking part in an international competition made a page lead in the Rossendale Free Press.
I have also been commissioned by Valley At Work to write a series of articles to introduce volunteer enterprise mentors who will be assisting people to live their business dreams. This year, once again, I have also been asked to provide news stories for Rossendale Business Awards.
At Fearns Community Sports College, a bushcraft reward day for pupils was held and a story on the event featured in the Rossendale Free Press as did the school’s careers’ day when a Secret Millionaire was an inspirational star guest. Check out the school website for more details.
