Head swims Lake Windermere

The head of a sports college led by example and swam the length of Lake Windermere to raise 


money for a Ugandan charity.

Nigel Dawson braved chilly waters to complete the 11.5 mile challenge just a few days before school resumed at the start of September.

Catherine Smyth has been contracted by the school for four years to publicise the good work of students... and staff.

Readers of the Big Issue will have read the latest story written by Catherine on an MPs trip to Uganda to look into the work of a charity that used to be based in his constituency.

Catherine has been employed to boose promotion for the Rossendale Business Awards and even before the deadline for nominations, more businesses have been nominated than in previous years and more people have put businesses forward.

As part of the contract with Veterans In Communities, Catherine produced the September newsletter and also helped to publicise a former military musician's plans to start a veterans' choir. The story was on About My Area and also in print in the Rossendale Free Press and Lancashire Telegraph.

The termly school newspaper at St Mary's RC School in Bacup has started and 10 eager young journalists are now writing stories for their own school newspaper.

And the first School News in a day project for this academic year is on Friday September 27th at Sharneyford School in Bacup.
